Rebel, Lady Rebel Track Teams Compete at Meyo Invitational

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Ole Miss track and field teams competed at the Meyo Invitational hosted on the campus of Notre Dame over the weekend with the Rebels and Lady Rebels posting four first place finishes.

Junior Brandon Atkinson led the way with one first place finish in the triple jump with his mark of 51-1. Atkinson followed that up with a personal best mark of 24-4.5 in the long jump, which was good for second place.

Fellow Rebel junior Shantel Glass turned in a season's best mark to win the long jump with his leap of 25-0.75. Glass' mark was an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Junior Chris Lawson finished fifth in the long jump with his personal best mark of 24-1.5.

Junior Antwon Hicks, currently ranked ninth in the world and first in the NCAA in the 60-meter hurdles, turned in another top performance in the event. Hicks took home the first place medal with his time of 7.70, which is his second NCAA automatic qualifying time of the season.

The Rebel 4x400-meter relay team composed of sophomore Mark Gregory, freshman Kao Wokoma and juniors Demondrick Shumaker and Franz Bernard teamed up for a first-place finish with their season's best time of 3:09.13. The time is also a provisional NCAA qualifying mark. Bernard captured two second place finishes, as well. He recorded a personal best and NCAA provisional mark with his time of 46.92 in the 400 meters. He also finished second in the 300 meters with his time of 34.00.

Shumaker placed second in the 500 meters with his time of 1:03.16, while freshman Demarco Potts placed third with his time of 1:03.66. Lawson finished in fifth place in the 200 meters by clocking in at 21.55 and he also finished sixth in the 60 meters with his time of 6.85.

Freshman Kimberly Mulkey turned in the top performance for the Lady Rebels with her second place finish in the 300 meters. Mulkey clocked in at 40.17 in the event. Sophomore Rachel Ellison placed third in the 1000 meters with her time of 2:54.20 and also finished seventh in the mile run with her time of 5:00.04.

Junior Brandie Plyler topped the pole vault in fifth place with her mark of 11-11.75. The mark set a new Ole Miss school record and personal best for Plyler. Junior Antisha Anderson finished in a tie for second place in the high jump by clearing 5-6. Junior Octavia Carter placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with her time of 8.72.

Ole Miss will return to the track on Friday, Feb. 13, when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Tyson Invitational.
