OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 2 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team will host Troy State Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center in its final tuneup before beginning SEC play this weekend. Incase of inclement weather, the match will be played indoors at the Gillom Sports Center.
The Rebels improved to 7-1 with a 5-2 win over Tennessee Tech last Saturday. Playing without one of their top players, the Rebels lost the doubles point, but rebounded to win five of the six singles in straight sets for the victory. Senior Claes Lindholm remained undefeated (8-0) with his straight-set win at No. 2 singles. He has won 13 of his last 14 matches dating back to the fall.
Troy State comes into the match with a 3-9 overall record. They are coming off a 5-2 loss to Florida Atlantic this past weekend. The Trojans are led by freshman Irving Morales at No. 1 singles. Morales a native of Valencia, Venezuela, has won eight of his last nine matches and is 8-4 at the top spot. Ole Miss defeated Troy State 6-1 last year in Oxford.
"This will be our final tuneup before we get underway in the SEC," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we can play another match outdoors before facing Alabama and Auburn this weekend."
Following Wednesday's match, the Rebels will turn their attention to the SEC, as the back-to-back Western Division Champions begin defense of their title against Alabama Friday at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, the Rebels will face Auburn at 1 p.m.
