OXFORD, Miss. - Former Ole Miss All-America tight end Wesley Walls will be the featured speaker here Friday, April 16 at the 15th annual Chucky Mullins Courage Award banquet, which begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Gillom Sports Center.
Established in the Spring of 1990 by the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity at Ole Miss, the Chucky Mullins Courage Award honors the late Chucky Mullins, who had his Rebel football career come to an end during the 1989 Homecoming game against Vanderbilt when he was paralyzed after making a tackle. After returning to his studies at Ole Miss, Mullins passed away on May 6, 1991.
The Chucky Mullins Courage Award goes to a rising senior defensive player at Ole Miss. Each winner then wears Mullins' No. 38 during that senior season. Past recipients include Chris Mitchell (1990), Jeff Carter (1991), Trea Southerland (1992), Johnny Dixon (1993), Alundis Brice (1994), Michael Lowery (1995), Derek Jones (1996), Nate Wayne (1997), Gary Thigpen (1998), Ronnie Heard (1999), Anthony Magee (2000), Kevin Thomas (2001), Lanier Goethie (2002) and Jamil Northcutt (2003).
The 2004 Chucky Mullins Courage Award winner will be announced during the banquet, jointly sponsored by Phi Kappa Psi and Phi Beta Sigma fraternities.
Walls, who earned first team All-America honors from the Associated Press during his senior season at Ole Miss in 1988, is a 15-year veteran of the National Football League, where he has earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.
He recently completed his first season as a tight end with the Green Bay Packers after spending seven years with the Carolina Panthers. Walls played five years with the San Francisco 49ers and then two years with the New Orleans Saints before going to Carolina.
Tickets for the 2004 Chucky Mullins Courage Award Banquet, which cost $15 for students and $25 for non students, may be reserved by calling (662) 915-7705. Tickets are also available in room 233 of the Lyceum or by contacting any member of Phi Beta Sigma or Phi Kappa Psi Fraternities on the University of Mississippi campus.
