OXFORD, Miss. - Three Ole Miss pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout as No. 4 (Collegiate Baseball) Ole Miss rolled to a 12-0 win over Southeastern Louisiana Wednesday evening, in front of 1,787 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field, to sweep the two-game series.
With the win, the Rebels improved to 22-3 on the season, while the Lions dropped to 7-16.
Sophomore left-hander Matt Maloney (1-0) worked three scoreless innings in his first career start and was designated the pitcher of record. He allowed just one hit and struck out five.
Sophomore right-hander Anthony Cupps followed Maloney and allowed two hits and two walks, while striking out three over four innings, and sophomore lefty Taylor Fowler pitched the final two innings. Fowler struck out three and walked one.
Sophomore first baseman Stephen Head went 4-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Ole Miss' 15-hit attack. Senior shortstop Matt Tolbert also collected three hits.
Head and Seth Smith both homered in the game for Ole Miss. Head hit a solo home run in the third, his ninth of the year, to make it 3-0. Smith belted his fourth of the year with a two-run shot in the fifth to extend the Rebels' lead to 5-0.
Senior left-hander Mark Weinmunson (2-2) suffered the loss, as he was tagged for five runs on nine hits and one walk in 4 1/3 innings.
Ole Miss will return to Southeastern Conference action Friday evening when the Rebels open a three-game series at Mississippi State. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., at Dudy Noble Stadium, Polk DeMent Stadium. Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday's series finale is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
