OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's golf team will celebrate Easter weekend by traveling to Opelika, Ala., for the 17th annual Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event begins Friday at the Saugahatchee Country Club with 7:30 a.m. tee times. The three-day tournament, which will be hosted by Auburn, continues Saturday and Sunday.
The Rebels and Tigers will be joined by UAB, the College of Charleston, Florida State, Georgia State, Jacksonville State, Memphis, Mississippi State, South Alabama, Southeastern Louisiana and Texas A&M in the 12-team field.
"We have shown a series of steady improvements throughout the spring and I think we are closing in on our ultimate goal," Ole Miss head coach Woody Cowart said of his team's hopes to win at least one regular-season tournament. "This team has been playing real well the last few months and that has led to a boost in our confidence. The Billy Hitchcock has a lot of competitive teams in it, but I think we are capable of beating them if we play well."
The tournament in Alabama will serve as Ole Miss' final tune-up for the Southeastern Conference Championships, which are slated for April 16-18 in Sea Island, Ga.
"We will continue to do some internal evaluation at this weekend's tournament," Cowart added. "I will be taking our five best golfers to the SEC Tournament and, while I think I know who those five are, there is still time for me to change my mind."
