AUSTIN, Texas - Ole Miss junior LaToya McBride made the most out of her first appearance at an NCAA Championship meet with her performance in the heptathlon. McBride tied a personal best with 5,189 points during the two-day event and placed 15th overall. Ole Miss junior Antwon Hicks also had a standout performance as he advanced to the finals of the 110-meter hurdles on Thursday evening.

"LaToya really had an outstanding meet," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "She was in a great position to earn All-America honors, but just had a hard time in the 800 meters. Overall, considering it was her first NCAA Championship experience, I am very impressed and pleased with her performance."

In her first event of the day, McBride recorded an 18-9.25 mark in the long jump. Her mark was the sixth best in the field and earned her 765 points in the event. After the long jump, McBride pulled herself into eighth place in the overall standings.

Next up for the Pine Bluff, Ark., native was the javelin. McBride recorded her fourth personal best of the meet with her mark of 108-3. For her efforts she added 533 points to her total.

The last event for the McBride was the 800 meters and the fatigue set in. McBride, who has run 10 seconds faster in previous meets, clocked in at 2:33.65. She earned 648 points in the 800 meters bringing her two-day total to 5,189 which ties her personal best achieved at the 2004 SEC Championships.

Hicks advanced to the finals of the 110-meter hurdles by recording a personal best time of 13.47 in the preliminaries. His time was second best in the field and was the top mark in his heat. Hicks has clocked in at 13.42 in his career, but that time was wind-aided.

"Antwon ran a phenomenal race," said Walker. "He did not get out of the blocks real well, but over the last three hurdles he just blew everyone away. It was the first time since his injury that he was really able to do that. After seeing him perform today I am really excited about what lies ahead for him."

The Rebel 4x400-meter relay team narrowly missed qualifying for finals. Junior Demondrick Shumaker, freshmen Demarco Potts and Kao Wokoma and senior Franz Bernard clocked in at 3:07.42.

"They competed really hard," said Walker. "Each runner was in a position to really make something happen. In the end, we just did not have enough to advance."

Hicks will return to the track on Friday for the 110-meter hurdle finals. He is scheduled to run at 9 p.m.
