OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 6 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team shut out the University of New Orleans 7-0, Friday afternoon at the Gillom Sports Center in the team's season opener.
The Rebels, defending SEC Champions, got off to a quick start in doubles to take an early 1-0 lead. After the Norweigan duo of sophomore Fredrik Aarum and freshman Erling Tveit won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, seniors Catalin Gard and Karim Alayli finished off New Orleans' No. 1 team, 8-2 to clinch the point. Ole Miss also won 8-2 at the No. 3 position.
All three of the Rebel newcomers got a chance to show the crowd of more than 200 their outstanding talents. Bram ten Berge, a native of the Netherlands, dominated Privateer, Saif Ali, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead.
2004 Swedish Junior National Champion Jakob Klaeson cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over UNO's Pierre Ros-Barbier and the Rebels were up 3-0.
Privateer Luka Bernard managed to get the first set off of Gard, the nation's No. 1 ranked player, on court one. After Bernard won the first set 6-3, Gard, the 2004 SEC Player of the Year, turned the heat up, and won going away, 6-1, 6-0 to clinch the win.
Tveit defeated Mano Erdei 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, Aarum beat Julien De La Mettrie, 6-1, 6-3 and Alayli downed Roman Shkurupiy 6-1, 6-0 to complete the sweep.
"We are pleased with the crowd for our first match," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "The new guys did a great job and responded to the pressure of the first match. I think the crowd saw that we have an exciting team and we will be fun to watch all year. We have the potential to be much improved in doubles and that will definitely go a long way in helping us achieve our goals."
The Rebels return to the courts Saturday, Feb. 5 against Tennessee Tech. The match will begin at Noon at the Gillom Sports Center.
