Ole Miss routed Rice, 110-63, in the season-opener on Friday evening at Tad Smith Coliseum. Five Lady Rebels notched double figures in the win over the Owls, led by junior All-American candidate Armintie Price's 23 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Carla Bartee came off-the-bench to pour in 21 points in just 16 minutes of play. Bartee connected on 5-of-6 from beyond the arc and made both of her free throws.
Junior guard Ashley Awkward controlled the point guard position, posting a career-high 18 points. Awkward also posted a game-high seven assists and collected five steals and five rebounds. Senior guard Ashley Johnson knocked down 3-of-5 treys on her way to 11 points.
Under the direction of third-year head coach Carol Ross, the Lady Rebels are 37-25. Ross, who played at Ole Miss from 1979-82, earned SEC Co-Coach of the Year honors in 2004 after guiding Ole Miss back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in eight seasons. Ross' Lady Rebels returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2004-05, falling to George Washington in the first round of play.
Clemson enters Monday's contest with an 0-3 record after falling to Missouri and Vanderbilt in Tempe, Ariz., and Tennessee Tech in its home opener on Friday. The Tigers return all five starters from last season and are led by Adrianne Bradshaw and Amanda Frist, who each averaged 9.0 points per game. Frist and Maxienne White lead Clemson with 5.0 rebounds per game, while Tasha Taylor is the leading assister with 5.0 dishes a game.
The Tigers are coached by Cristy McKinney, who is in her first year with the program. McKinney joined the Clemson program in the spring after guiding Rice, Ole Miss' opponent in the season-opener, to a Co-WAC Championship in 2004-05 and its second program NCAA appearance. McKinney's overall coaching mark is 216-142 in her 13th season.
Clemson holds a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series, however, Ole Miss defeated the Tigers, 67-54, last season in Tupelo, Miss.
