KINGSTON, R.I. -
Ole Miss got 17 points and 17 rebounds from junior guard Armintie Price to hand Brown a 56-47 loss in the consolation game of the University of Rhode Island Classic Saturday afternoon. With the win Ole Miss improves to 4-1 on the season, while Brown falls to 1-3.
"It certainly was not pretty," said Ole Miss head coach Carol Ross. "We managed to pull out the win, but we need to head back to Oxford and get back to practice. We have many areas we need to improve and we also need a little rest. Playing four games in six days has taken its toll."
Brown opened the game with a 7-0 run before a baseline jumper by senior guard LaTanya Jones got Ole Miss on the board at the 18:15 mark of the first half. Jones would sink two foul shots three minutes later to pull Ole Miss to 7-4 at the first media time out. Midway through the first half of play, Ole Miss would go on a 7-0 run to take a 14-11 lead and would never trail again.
Price went to the free throw line 10 times in the first half, connecting on seven to help Ole Miss take a 29-26 lead into the break.
Brown scored the first bucket of the second half to cut the Ole Miss lead to one at 29-28 but would not score again until the 12:50 mark of the second period. Ole Miss would score 16 points during that span and pull out to a 45-28 lead. Junior guard Ashley Awkward knocked down a jumper with 10:06 left in the game to give Ole Miss its biggest lead at 51-31.
Neither team could manage to score much for the next few minutes, but Brown finally it rolling, outscoring Ole Miss 10-0 over the next eight minutes to slice the Lady Rebel lead in half to 10 points with just under four minutes remaining.
A three-pointer by senior guard Ashley Johnson and a lay-up by sophomore forward Jada Mincy would give Ole Miss its final points and enough for the 56-47 win.
Price led all scorers with her 17 points and tied a career-high with the 17 boards. It is the fourth time in her career she has pulled down 17 rebounds. It also marked her 32nd career double-double and sixth consecutive dating back to last season's final game versus George Washington. For her efforts, Price was named to the URI Classic All-Tournament Team. She posted 31 points and 28 rebounds during the two games.
Joining Price in double figures were Awkward with 11 points and Johnson with 10. Jones, earning her first career start, added six points as did Mincy. Sophomore forward Carla Bartee, who also earned her first start as a Lady Rebel, corralled seven boards. Awkward led the team in assists with three and steals with four.
Ole Miss shot 32.8 percent from the field, but held Brown to just 27.7 percent shooting. The Lady Rebels made 12-of-15 from the foul line and nearly doubled-up the Bears on the boards 60-36.
Ole Miss will return to the friendly confines of Tad Smith Coliseum to host a pair of games this week. They will first welcome Tennessee State to Oxford on Wednesday, Nov. 30. The game will be played at 11 a.m., as part of "School Day" activities. Elementary and middle school students from across Mississippi are invited to attend the game as part of a field trip. On Saturday, Dec. 3, the Lady Rebels will host Alabama-Birmingham at 2 p.m.
