Rebel Netters Defeat Northwestern 6-1 Late Tuesday

EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 6 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team downed Northwestern 6-1 late Tuesday night at the Combe Tennis Center. With the win, the Rebels improved to 4-0 as they get set to face Southern Cal in the first round of the National Team Indoor Thursday at 9 a.m.
Ole Miss won a close doubles point with 8-6 wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. The Rebels are now 48-3 when they win the doubles point dating back to the 2002 season.
In singles, Ole Miss picked up straight set wins at four of the positions to close out the win. Junior Juan Pablo Di Cesare downed Jamie Friedland of NU, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. Freshman Jakob Klaeson topped Wildcat Matt Christian 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 5 position.
Rebel freshman Erling Tveit beat Adam Schaechterle (NU) 7-5, 7-6 at No. 4 singles, and sophomore Eric Claesson handed Wildcat Christian Temke a 7-6, 6-3 loss on court two.
The Wildcats only win on the evening came at the No. 3 position where Willy Lock defeated Rebel freshman Bram ten Berge in three tight sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
In the feature match of the night, senior Catalin Gard, ranked No. 1 in the nation, was tested by Wildcat Tommy Hanus, in a match that lasted 2 ½ hours. After winning the first set 6-4, Hanus rallied in the second to win a tiebreak. The third set was back and forth, until Gard broke in the 11th game and served out for the 7-5 win.
