Fowler, No. 14 Ole Miss Shut Down Southeast Missouri State

OXFORD, Miss. - Junior left-hander Eric Fowler struck out a career-high nine as three pitchers combined on a shutout as No. 14 (Baseball America) Ole Miss defeated Southeast Missouri State 3-0 Wednesday afternoon at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. The victory extended the Rebels' win streak to 10 games.
Fowler (1-1) limited the Redhawks (6-9) to four hits and walked one in throwing seven scoreless innings in his first start of the season.
Redshirt freshman right-hander Jon-Jon Hancock pitched a scoreless eighth inning in his first career appearance, and sophomore Michael Wakefield worked a scoreless ninth to earn his first save of the year.
Ole Miss (15-3) scored all the runs it needed in the fifth inning. Stephen Head gave the Rebels a 1-0 lead with an infield RBI single to score Miles Franklin, who reached on a lead-off walk. Brian Pettway then followed with another infield single to load the bases and Alex Presley walked to force home Osteen and make it 2-0.
The Rebels added their third run with an RBI single by Cooper Osteen in the sixth.
Senior right-hander Ryan Forsyth (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on four hits and six walks in five innings. He also struck out three.
Head and Osteen both recorded two hits and Pettway went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 18 games.
Eric Horstman went 2-for-4 to lead Southeast Missouri State at the plate.
The Rebels out-hit the Redhawks 6-5 on the afternoon.
Ole Miss will open Southeastern Conference play with a three-game series against No. 6 Florida, beginning Friday evening at 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
