Ole Miss Falls To Georgia In SEC Quarterfinal

3/4/2005 | Women's Basketball

March 4, 2005

Box Score

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Sherill Baker scored 17 points and six Georia players scored in double figures, leading the No. 21 Lady Bulldogs to an 87-65 victory over Mississippi in a quarterfinal round game of the Southern Conference tournament.

Georgia supplied the first blowout in a tournament that included top-ranked LSU needing a review of a replay to beat Alabama 60-59 earlier Friday. Only one of the previous six games in the tournament was decided by double figures, Tennessee's 64-54 quarterfinal win over Auburn.

This game looked as if it, too, would be decided at the end when Armintie Price made two free throws to pull Mississippi within 52-50 with 12:24 left.

But the Lady Bulldogs (22-8) went on a 19-2 run over the next five minutes to put the game away.

Georgia will face LSU in Saturday's semifinals.

Cori Chambers got Georgia's decisive run started with a 3-pointer, and Baker followed with another 3. Three minutes later, Chambers added another basket from long range before finishing the streak with a driving layup that put the Lady Bulldogs ahead 71-52.

Mississippi pulled within 73-58 when Elizabeth Cansdale finished a four-point play.

Freshman Megan Darrah had 14 points for Georgia. Janese Hardrick scored 13 points while Chambers and SEC freshman of the year Tasha Humphrey added 12 points each.

Price scored 18 of her 21 points in the first half for Mississippi (19-10).

Ole Miss (19-10) was trying for its first 20-win season in 10 years. That will likely have to wait until the NCAA tournament. If the Lady Rebels receive a bid, it would be their second-straight trip to the tournament.
