Atkinson And Hicks Lead Ole Miss At Sun Angel Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. - The senior duo of Brandon Atkinson and Antwon Hicks continue to pace the Ole Miss track and field team this spring. Atkinson took home the triple jump title for the Rebels, while Hicks remained undefeated in hurdle races during his senior season.

"Brandon and Antwon continue to be at their best when it counts most," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "Meet in and meet out they have been the competitors we have been looking for. I am excited about what lies ahead for them during the remainder of their senior seasons."

Atkinson collected his fourth triple jump title of the 2005 outdoor season by leaping a career best 53-5. Atkinson moved up to second on the Ole Miss all-time triple jump chart with his winning mark on Saturday. Marcus Jones owns the top Ole Miss mark at 54-9. The Sun Angel title is Atkinson's fourth-straight, after winning the LSU Invitational, Ole Miss Invitational and Mississippi Invitational in previous weeks.

Hicks clocked in at 13.76 in the 110-meter hurdles. He has now won three-straight outdoor races after going undefeated in the indoor season and claiming his second-straight NCAA title in the 60-meter hurdles. Hicks owns the second fastest time in the NCAA this season at 13.68.

Fellow senior Shantel Glass came up with third place in the long jump with his leap of 25-0.5. Right behind him was sophomore Charles Bailey with his fourth place jump of 24-4.25.

Junior Chris Lawson crossed the finish line in 10.66 in the 100 meters, which was good for sixth place to close out the scoring for the Rebel men.

Freshman Carmia Carroll led the Rebel women as she placed second in the high jump by clearing 5-7. Carroll's senior teammate LaToya McBride was third in the high jump as she too cleared 5-7.

Freshman Kenyata Coleman continues to be a force on the track as she placed third in the 400 meters with her time of 53.83. Freshman Sirdonea Davis was seventh in the event with her time of 55.71.

Fellow freshman Kirby Patterson was fifth in the 800 meters with her time of 2:11.31. Sophomore Kimberly Mulkey turned in a personal best time in the 200 meters with her eighth place finish of 24.00. Mulkey is just .04 seconds off a regional qualifying mark. Sophomore Shannon Chandler was sixth in the 5,000 meters with her time of 18:41.28.

The Rebel women had solid performances in the relays as the 4x100-meter relay team finished third with their time of 45.04 and the 4x400-meter relay team placed second with their time of 3:39.43.

The Ole Miss track and field teams will return to Oxford to host the Ole Miss Open on Saturday, April 23. It will the final of three home meets for the Rebels during the 2005 season.
