ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. - The Ole Miss men's golf team shot a final-round 295 on Sunday and moved up to finish in 11th place at the SEC Championships at the Sea Island Golf Club - Seaside Course.

The par 70, 7,005-yard course presented heavy winds and difficult greens for the entire weekend, as the University of Kentucky Wildcats claimed their first-ever SEC Championship with a 35-over-par three-day total of 875.

Auburn (877), Georgia (883), Florida (888) and Tennessee rounded out the top five leaderboard for the tournament.

Ole Miss' Sunday round of 295 was their best for the tournament and the fifth-best team round of the day. Their hot shooting enabled them to defeat the Vanderbilt Commodores by two strokes. The Rebels ended the tournament at 915 with round totals of 311, 309 and 295.

"We were pleased with the much-better round today, and I am pleased with the amount of effort and dedication our team has showed all year long," said Ole Miss head coach Ernest Ross. "These were some of the most difficult greens I've ever seen at a college tournament and at a lot of PGA tournaments. This course required a lot of local knowledge and unfortunately we started learning it a little too late."

SEC stroke average leader Jordan Dempsey capped his stellar senior season and Ole Miss career with his 11th top-20 finish out of 11 tournaments this season. He shot a 75-73-74--222 to finish in a tie for 14th place.

Sophomore Kyle Ellis finished second for the Rebels after a team-best round of 72 on Sunday. His 79-78-72--229 was good for a tie for 37th.

Other Ole Miss scores for the tournament included sophomore Brice Bailey's 75-79-76--230, sophomore Callum Macaulay's 82-82-73--237 and senior Lucas Boyd's 85-79-79--243.

The Rebels wrapped up the 2004-05 with significant improvements over last season, notching a stroke average three strokes lower than last season's (294-297) and capturing their first two team tournament titles since 1999 with victories at the Raising Cane Classic and the All-South Collegiate Invitational.
