NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Freshman left-hander David Price tied a career-high with nine strikeouts as No. 23 (Sports Weekly/ESPN) Vanderbilt defeated No. 6 (Baseball America) Ole Miss 7-2 Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of this weekend's three-game Southeastern Conference series, in front of a stadium record 2,067 at Charles Hawkins Field.

Price (2-0) limited the Rebels (21-7, 5-4 SEC) to two runs, one earned, on four hits and three walks in 7 2/3 innings.

The Commodores broke open a 3-2 game by scoring three runs in the fourth. Shortstop Rucker Taylor hit a two-out, two-run single to score Aaron Garza and Matt Zeller and chase starter Anthony Cupps from the game. Junior left-hander Matt Maloney then came on in relief and first baseman Mike Baxter doubled off the wall in right field to score Taylor and extend the Commodores' lead to 6-2.

Second baseman Warner Jones hit his fourth home run of the season with a solo shot in the sixth to make it 7-2.

Cupps (5-2) allowed six runs on 10 hits and walked none, while striking out two, in 3 2/3 innings in being charged with the loss.

Baxter finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and Jones went 2-for-3 with an RBI as eight different Commodores recorded a hit on the afternoon.

Vanderbilt out-hit Ole Miss 14-4.

Junior right fielder Brian Pettway went 0-for-3 for Ole Miss to snap his school-record hitting streak at 27 games.

Vanderbilt scored three runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead, while Ole Miss answered with two runs in the third to make it 3-2.

Ole Miss will return to action Tuesday evening when the Rebels complete an eight-game road swing with a 6:30 p.m., game at in-state rival Southern Miss. Ole Miss will then open a three-game SEC series against Alabama next Friday evening at 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
