AUBURN, Ala. - Ole Miss junior guard Armintie Price pulled down 12 rebounds and sophomore forward Jada Mincy grabbed 11 as Ole Miss prevailed 51-48 at Auburn to pick up its first win in Southeastern Conference play. The Lady Rebels shot just 29.4 percent from the field, but held a 49-46 advantage over the much taller Tigers to pull out the victory.
"I am really proud of this team today," said Ole Miss head coach Carol Ross. "We weathered a great run by Auburn and controlled the backboards down the stretch. We struggled shooting today from both the field and the free throw line, but some big offensive rebounds made the difference."
Auburn scored first on a jumper in the lane by Nitasha Brown, but Ole Miss would respond with a three-pointer by senior guard Ashley Johnson to take the lead. The Lady Rebels spread the ball around and pulled out to a 15-point lead with 6:21 to go in the first period. Auburn made its run pulling with five at intermission at 25-20.
The Tigers again got on the board first to start the second period off a lay-up by DeWanna Bonner. Ole Miss countered with two free throws by sophomore forward Danetra Forrest to reclaim a five-point lead. Auburn then outscored the Lady Rebels 13-5 to take their first lead of the game with 14:26 left to play.
The two teams traded baskets with Auburn taking its largest lead of the game of 35-32 off another lay-up by Bonner. Price then made a basket and free throw to tie the game up. Ole Miss then got baskets from freshman Shawn Goff and Price to take a four point edge.
Johnson hit a three with 5:42 remaining and sophomore guard Tasi Worsham hit a jumper as the shot clock expired to keep the Tigers at bay. Despite missing five of six free throws down the stretch, Ole Miss grabbed rebounds and kept the Tigers from scoring to pull out the win.
"This was a great team effort," aaid Ross. "Eleven players scored and everybody rebounded the ball. Most importantly it was great to get back in the win column."
Johnson led Ole Miss with 14 points. She also pulled down six rebounds. Price posted 11 points to go along with her game-high 12 rebounds. She also dished five assists and picked up four steals. Forrest finished with six points and Mincy added four to go along with her 11 rebounds.
Auburn was led by Bonner with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Alexis Ogubie came off the bench to score 10 points and Marita Payne tallied 10 points and nine blocks.
Ole Miss made just 20-of-68 shots from the floor, including 5-of-13 from beyond the arc. Auburn connected on 19-of-56 from the field, but made just 2-of-14 from three point land.
Ole Miss returns to Oxford to host a pair of games this week. The Lady Rebels will welcome #24 Florida on Thursday and Kentucky on Sunday.
