OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss (8-3) got a big day on the mound again, pitching its second straight shutout of the season as two newcomers again combined for a shutout as the 18th-ranked Rebels downed the Flames of UIC (3-7) by a score of 5-0 on Sunday.
Freshman Lance Lynn (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, pitching 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit as he struck out three and walked one. Junior Garrett White then picked up the save, his first of the season, as he worked the final 3.1 innings, holding the Flames to one hit and no runs as he struck out five and walked one.
Don Phillis (0-3) suffered his third loss of the season as he gave up three runs on five hits. He walked none and struck out none in his 5.2 innings of work.
"It is not often you play two straight games and allow no runs," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "Lance pitched great today. He was very impressive considering it was his first collegiate start. He pitched with a lot of confidence."
The Rebels struck first in the pitchers duel as Ole Miss put a run on the board in the fifth inning. Justin Henry led off with a single and moved to second on a single from Mark Wright. Both runners advanced on a ground out to third from Jon-Jon Hancock. Henry then scored on a sacrifice fly to center field from Justin Brashear to put Ole Miss in the lead.
The Rebels then added two runs in the sixth inning off a home run from Zack Cozart that flew 364 feet over the left field wall. The home run scored Cozart and C.J. Ketchum, who singled through the right side to reach base earlier in the inning.
Ole Miss capped the game with two runs in the eighth for the final 5-0 margin.
Ketchum led the Rebels at the plate for the second straight day, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Alex Presley was the only other Rebel to notch more than one hit on the day as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Cozart led the team in scoring production, as he drove in three of the team's five runs with his home run and sacrifice fly.
Ole Miss will close out its 13-game home stand to open the season when the Rebels host Murray State in a two game series. The Rebels and Thoroughbreds will take the field at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday for the first game and play the second game at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
