Box Score
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Ole Miss lost a pair of close softball games on Saturday, 3-2 in 10 innings and 2-0, to drop a doubleheader to South Carolina at Beckham Field.
The Rebels fall to 16-33 overall and 3-19 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Gamecocks improve to 26-25 and 6-16.
One bright spot for the Rebels was that freshman shortstop Lisa Conchos tied the school record with a hit in 10 straight contests. The native of Phoenix, Ariz., failed to record a hit in game two, so her streak ends tied with April Caraway (1997) and DeDe Justice (2005).
In game one, Ole Miss tied the game at 2-2 in the seventh inning to send the contest into overtime, but the Rebels were defeated 3-2 in the 10th inning.
Senior right-hander Dana Brill (8-14) pitched a complete game, going nine innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, with eight strikeouts and three walks.
Junior Mary Jane Callahan led the Rebels at the plate in game one with a 2-for-3 performance and an RBI.
The Rebels got a lead-off single from Callahan in the top of the first inning. Senior third baseman Rebecca McIntire then sacrificed Callahan to second, but the Rebels could not move any further in order to score.
Three consecutive one-out singles by seniors Mandy Ott and Stacy McCommon and sophomore Kayla Mosley in the second inning loaded the bases for Callahan, who hit a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead. McIntire came up next and hit a line drive to left, which was caught on a diving effort by the Gamecocks' Margaret Person.
South Carolina took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third. With two outs, right fielder Jessica Josker tied the game with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Person, who had walked. The next batter, Ashton Payne, also singled up the middle, allowing Josker to score from second base and give the Gamecocks the lead.
Callahan led off the fifth inning with a double to the center field wall, followed by McIntire reaching on an infield error to give the Rebels two runners with no outs. A pop out, ground out and strikeout prevented a Rebel score, though.
Conchos recorded a hit in the top of the seventh to tie the school record with a hit in her 10th straight game, but more importantly it was an RBI single that plated Mosley, who had led off the inning by reaching on an error, to tie the game at 2-2.
South Carolina loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the 10th, when Ashton Payne hit a single up the middle to plate the game-winning run.
Gamecock starter Christie Hamilton earned the win, going the complete 10 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits, with 10 strikeouts and a pair of walks.
For the game, the Rebels out-hit the Gamecocks 7-6 and recorded one error the South Carolina's three, but the Rebels left 10 runners on base.
Game 2
In the back end of the doubleheader, the Rebels got a solid outing in the circle from Callahan (7-16), who went the full six innings and scattered seven hits, striking out three. She did surrender two runs, but they were both unearned.
Gamecock starter Kate Pouliot (5-6) tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing three hits and striking out six.
South Carolina broke onto the scoreboard first in the second inning, when Ashley Smith hit a two-out RBI single to right field, scoring Christie Hamilton, who had earlier reached on an error and been sacrificed to second. Another unearned run scored when Margaret Person hit a single to left field, and Vanessa Gibbs' throw to third base was errant, allowing the Gamecocks to take a 2-0 lead.
Rowe and freshman catcher Michelle May led off the fifth inning with back-to-back singles to break up Kate Pouliot's no-hit bid, but could not come around to score.
A 25-minute delay occurred in the bottom of the fifth, but the two teams got back underway, and there was no further scoring, as the Gamecocks took both games on the day.
The two squads will return to the diamond to wrap up the series with a contest Sunday at noon EST.
