COLUMBIA, S.C. - Sophomore second baseman Lauren Rowe hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to propel the Ole Miss softball team to a 5-4 comeback victory over South Carolina at Beckham Field on Sunday.
Junior outfielder Mary Jane Callahan tied a school record with four hits, and she had two RBI and two runs, while Rowe was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Senior center fielder Stacy McCommon also had two hits on the afternoon.
"Today was a good team win for us," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. "M.J. and Lauren had some good individual performances and came through in clutch situations, but I was pleased that the team as a whole kept fighting and came through with a win."
Senior right-hander Dana Brill (9-14) earned the win with a complete-game performance, giving up four runs (three earned) on 12 hits and striking out six, with no walks allowed.
Ole Miss (17-33, 4-19 SEC) got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Rowe hit a single between the first baseman and right fielder down the right field line, scoring Callahan, who had singled to lead off the game.
South Carolina (26-26, 6-17 SEC) answered in the bottom half of the second inning. Three straight one-out singles loaded the bases, then Margaret Person slapped a chopper to senior Mandy Ott at first base, but Ott's play at home was too late as the Gamecocks tied it 1-1. A lineout to shortstop and fly out to left field ended the threat as the Gamecocks stranded three runners.
The Gamecocks added two more in the third, including an RBI single by Lisa Longo on a chopper that just clipped the top of senior Rebecca McIntire's glove at third base.
A two-run double by Callahan with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the fourth tied the game at 3-3. On the hit, pinch-runner Vanessa Gibbs and McCommon scored.
The Gamecocks reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Longo hit another chopper that clipped McIntire's glove, this time for an RBI double to bring in Chrissy Schoonmaker from second base and make it a 4-3 score.
Callahan got a leadoff single in the top of the seventh to record her fourth base hit of the game for a new career high. She is the ninth Rebel in school history to get four hits in a game. McIntire followed with an infield single of her own. Conchos then sacrificed both runners over to give Ole Miss runne`rs at second and third with one out, when Rowe hit her team-leading ninth double of the year to give the Rebels a 5-4 lead. Rowe's 27 RBI rank sixth on the all-time Rebel single season list.
Gamecock starter Christie Hamilton (13-14) took the loss, also pitching a complete game. She allowed five runs on 10 hits with one walk and three strikeouts in the losing effort.
The Rebels will wrap up a three-game home-neutral-away series with Mississippi State in Starkville on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Ole Miss will be looking to go a perfect 7-0 against teams from Mississippi this season.
Following Wednesday's action, Ole Miss will play its final home conference series when the club takes on the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday and Sunday. Game three on Sunday will mark Senior Day for five Rebels - Jill Bandhauer, Dana Brill, Stacy McCommon, Rebecca McIntire and Mandy Ott.
