PALO ALTO, Calif. - Erling Tveit of the Ole Miss men's tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships Wednesday at the Taube Tennis Center.
Tveit, ranked No. 22 in the nation, defeated SMU's Peter Oredsson in straight sets. After winning the first set 6-1, the two battled back and forth to a 4-4 tie in the second. Tveit broke and served it out to move on to the second round in his first NCAA Individual Championships appearance. The ITA's Southeast Region Player to Watch, Tveit will face the winner of the Matt Bruch (Stanford)/Andrei Mlenda (TCU) match in Thursday's second round.
Teammate Eric Claesson was not as fortunate, dropping his opening-round match to Fresno State's Jakub Cech in three sets. Claesson, ranked No. 53 in the nation, won the first set 6-3, but Cech, ranked No. 47, came back to win the second and third sets 6-3, 6-2 respectively. Claesson finishes the year at 36-13, his best campaign as a Rebel.
Tveit and Claesson are seeded No. 5-8 in doubles, and will face a familiar opponent in Thursday's first round. The All-SEC duo will square off against Callum Beale and Miguel Reyes Varela, their doubles opponents in Ole Miss' round of 16 match against Texas last Saturday. The Reb duo led the Longhorn pair 7-5 and had a match point before play was stopped after Texas clinched the doubles. Tveit and Claesson have won 18 of their last 20 matches.
