Lady Rebels Tame Lady Golden Lions 73-64

OXFORD, Miss. - Behind the double-double performance of senior Carla Bartee, the Lady Rebels improved to 4-0 at home this season as they posted a 73-64 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Ole Miss’ annual School Day game Monday morning at Tad Smith Coliseum.        

           

With over 2,600 kids in attendance, Bartee collected a season-high 18 points to go along with 13 rebounds to register her third double-double this season. Bartee also recorded five assists and three steals.

           

Junior center Shawn Goff poured in 12 points while also tallying seven boards and a game-high four blocked shots. With her quartet of blocked shots, Goff now ranks fifth all-time in school history with 93 career blocks as she moves past Kimsey O’Neal who recorded 92 career blocked shots.

 

Sophomore Elizabeth Robertson chipped in with 10 points after going 3-of-6 from the floor, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc. Sophomore guard Shantell Black followed behind with nine point and nine assists.

           

For the game, Ole Miss shot just over 55 percent from the floor while holding Arkansas-Pine Bluff to a mere 34.4 percent. 

           

Ole Miss (4-3, 0-0 SEC) was able to use its inside game to the team’s advantage as they outscored Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the paint 34-22. The Lady Rebels were also more aggressive on as Ole Miss held a lopsided 45-29 rebounding advantage. 

           

Turnovers plagued both teams as the Lady Rebels committed 30 errors for the day. Although Ole Miss was able to collect 23 points off of the Golden Lions’ 21 mistakes, Arkansas-Pine Bluff took advantage in the second half with 11 points off turnovers of their own to close the gap Ole Miss had built in the opening period. 

           

Coming back from the locker rooms at halftime, Robertson got the Lady Rebels off on the right foot as she hit a three-point shot to put Ole Miss up 48-29.

 

Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-6, 0-0 SWAC) managed to cut that 19-point lead down to 10 by using an 11-5 run midway through the second half that was capped off by two shots from three-point range by Tashayla Jackson, making the score to 72-62.

           

From the 2:08 mark, both teams failed to hit a field goal for the remainder of the game, leaving Ole Miss victorious after free throw shots from both teams ended the game.

           

Golden Lion guard Delores Hughley posted a team-high 14 points while Arica Green collected 12 points of her own. Shadae Martin recorded a team-high six rebounds for Arkansas-Pine Bluff. 

           

At halftime, the Lady Rebels held a 43-29 lead after shooting over 57 percent from the floor.

           

Bartee led the team with 11 points and eight rebounds with Goff right behind at eight points at intermission. 

           

Ole Miss jumped out to a 14-2 lead to start off the game. The Lady Rebels continued to move ahead by using a 20-12 run late in the stanza to gain their largest advantage of the game at 20 with just over five minutes left to play in the half.

           

The Red and Blue returns to action Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. when Ole Miss faces its third Big Ten opponent this season by heading north to take on Penn State.
