Melson Named SEC Freshman Of The Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Ole Miss women’s basketball freshman guard Kayla Melson was selected as the SEC Freshman of the Week following her performances in helping the Lady Rebels to a 1-1 week in games against UAB and at No. 17/19 Ohio State the league announced Monday.    

 

Melson opened the week by scoring a team-high 15 points in helping the Lady Rebels to a 74-62 victory over UAB, marking the second consecutive game in which she led the team in scoring.  In addition, Melson recorded a career-high five rebounds to go along with one assist and one steal in 28 minutes of action. 

 

In the following game at No. 17/19 Ohio State, Melson again turned in a double-digit performance as the Lady Rebels nearly pulled off an upset victory over the Buckeyes.  Melson scored 10 points for her third straight game in double figures, while adding four rebounds for the Lady Rebels.  The Montgomery, Ala., native also registered a game-high three steals to go along with one assist. 

 

Melson currently ranks 12th in the SEC in assists per game with 3.17 and 13th in the conference in steals per game with 2.17. 

 

Melson becomes the first Lady Rebel to be selected as SEC Freshman of the Week since sophomore Alliesha Easley earned the award Jan. 15, 2007. 

 

The Lady Rebels return to action Dec. 10 at 11:00 a.m. when Ole Miss welcomes Arkansas-Pine Bluff to Tad Smith Coliseum.
