2/13/2007 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss men’s tennis senior Eric Claesson has been named the SEC Player of the Week for his match-clinching win in the Rebels’ victory against Mississippi State, last Thursday.

The All-American rallied to defeat MSU’s 32nd-ranked Ivan Bjelica to clinch the match (4-0) for the Rebels. It marked Ole Miss’ eighth straight in the River Hills Cup (including five consecutive shutouts) and 18th in a row in the overall series.

“The SEC is the strongest tennis conference in the nation, and it is a tremendous honor for Eric to be named the player of the week,” head coach Billy Chadwick said.  He works very hard and is a great leader of our team.”

This marks the second time Claesson has been named the SEC Player of the Week, also earning the honor in 2005.

Claesson improved to 6-0 in dual matches and has now won 11 straight dual matches dating back to last year.

The Rebels are back in action Wednesday at Northwestern for a 6 p.m., match.  Following that match, the team will head down to Chicago for the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor.
