Men's Tennis Dominates UAB 7-0

2/4/2007 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The No. 6 nationally ranked Ole Miss men’s tennis team kicked off Super Bowl Sunday in style, dominating UAB 7-0 at the Gillom Sports Center.  The Rebels (5-0) needed just 2 hours to make it official against the Blazers (1-2).

For the fifth straight match, the Rebels swept the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead.  The Rebels improved to 85-4 when they win the doubles point since the 2002 season.

Ole Miss dominated the Blazers in singles, making quick work at the top three spots to conclude their five-match homestand.  Senior All-American Eric Claesson  downed UAB’s Tim Bauer 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. He has now won six dual matches in a row dating back to last season.

Moments later, junior Robbye Poole added the third point, beating his opponent by the same score at No. 3 singles.

Junior All-American Erling Tveit cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Blazer Hanns Spangenberg at the top spot to clinch the victory.

Jakob Klaeson and Jonas Berg posted easy victories at Nos. 4 and 5 singles to make it 6-0 and then Chris Rea added the final point with a three set win at No.6 singles.

“We are extremely pleased with the guys,” head coach Billy Chadwick said.  “This was a great team effort.  We let up a little at No. 1 doubles, but we did a good job in taking care of business in singles.

“Everybody got to see action in our first five matches. We have great depth and that could be what makes the difference at the end.”

The Rebels now turn their attention to the annual Mississippi Cup against arch-rival Mississippi State. The two teams will square off Thursday at 5 p.m. at the River Hills Club in Jackson.  Ole Miss has won seven straight cups, including four consecutive shutouts.

“We have a big challenge coming up with Mississippi State, and then with the National Team Indoor following tha,” Chadwick said.  “State has a young, but talented team.  We will need to be at our best.”
