5/23/2007 | Men's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. -- Ole Miss men’s tennis players Erling Tveit and Robbye Poole won their matches Wednesday morning to advance to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

First off the court, Poole, ranked No. 33 in the nation, defeated 40th-ranked Brian Hung of Michigan 6-4, 6-3 to move into the second round.  Poole was up 5-2 in the first set and went on to win it 6-4.  In the second set, he got down 0-2, before tying it up.  At 3-3 Poole won three straight games to advance.

Poole will face Boise State’s Luke Shields (9-16 seed) in the second round, Thursday.  Shields downed Nick Rinks of Michigan State 6-2, 6-1 in the first round.

Soon after Poole had won his match, Tveit (9-16 seed) took the court against Stanford’s Matt Bruch.  Coming into the match, the two All-Americans were tied at 1-1 with Tveit winning the last meeting, a straight set victory in the second round at last year’s NCAAs.

Tveit, ranked No. 13 in the country, faced the first of two break points on his serve in the third game, but held for a 2-1 lead.  He then broke Bruch to go up 3-1.  After Tveit staved off another break point on his serve in the fifth game to take a 4-1 lead, Bruch retired due to injury, giving Tveit his second win in three meetings.

In the second round, Tveit will meet Ohio State’s Bryan Koniecko.  Koniecko outlasted Vanderbilt’s Ryan Preston in three sets.

Tveit will also team up with senior Eric Claesson in the 32-team doubles field beginning Thursday.  The pair will play Nick Cavaday and William Noblitt of North Carolina State.
