Ole Miss Men's Tennis Nets Three All-Americans

6/1/2007 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss men’s tennis players Eric Claesson, Robbye Poole and Erling Tveit earned All-America honors for the 2007 season.  The Rebels tied with NCAA Champion Georgia, LSU and Miami for the most All-Americans.

“To earn All-America honors is a great accomplishment for any student-athlete,” head coach Billy Chadwick said.  “Erling, Eric and Robbye did a great job of leading the team to our sixth consecutive SEC West title as well as the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and a final national ranking of No. 7.  With six players from our 2007 lineup returning, and a healthy Bram ten Berge, we are looking forward to next year.”

Players earn ITA All-America honors in singles and/or doubles based on their final Fila National Ranking, advancement at the NCAA Championships and/or seeding at the NCAA Championships. The ITA All-America Team for men dates back to 1957.

Tveit, a native of Oslo, Norway, earned the honor for the second year in a row in both singles and doubles.  He became the first Rebel to earn All-America distinction multiple times in singles and doubles.  The All-SEC first team junior finished ranked No. 16 in the nation in singles and No. 10 in doubles.

Poole became the 20th All-American in the history of the program, picking up the honor for the first time.  The Summerville, S.C., junior enjoyed an outstanding season, posting a team-leading 35-11 overall record.  He earned All-SEC first team honors and ended the year ranked No. 33 in the nation in singles.

Claesson completed a four-year career with the Rebels by teaming with Tveit to reach the quarterfinals at the NCAA Doubles Championships on his way to grabbing All-America accolades for the second time.  Tveit and Claesson’s final doubles ranking marks the second straight year for the duo to end the season ranked in the top 10.  In singles, Claesson finished ranked No. 80.  He combined for more than 160 wins in singles and doubles during his career.

The Rebels posted a 24-5 overall record, the program’s 10th 20-win season.  In addition to winning the West, the Rebels finished second overall in the SEC standings, reached the SEC Tournament final for the second year in a row, and hosted an NCAA Regional for the seventh straight year.
