Rebel Golfers Start Strong But Fall Off At Scenic City

9/10/2007 | Men's Golf

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. The Ole Miss men’s golf team got off to a good start at the Scenic City Invitational Monday with a first round 281, but could not sustain the momentum, shooting a second round 300 at the Council Fire Golf Club.

The Rebels were tied for fourth after the first round but fell to a tie for 10th heading into Tuesday’s final round.    Charlotte (543) leads host Tennessee-Chattanooga (545) by two strokes after two rounds.

In the first round, senior David Marino carded a 68, junior Jesse Speirs posted a 69, freshman Jonathan Randolph fired a 71 and senior Kyle Ellis and freshman Chris Mullhaupt both finished with 73s.

Unfortunately most of the scores went up in the second round.  Marino came back with a 76 and is T33 with Speirs, who shot 75 in the second round.  Ellis shot 72 in the second round and Randolph and Mullhaupt turned in 77s.

“We made a lot of errors, some in the short game and hit some balls out of play,” head coach Ernest Ross said.  “We played uncharacteristically bad.  I am counting on our guys to rebound tomorrow.”
