Rebels Enjoy Successful First Day At SEC Indoor

NEW ORLEANS - Five members of the Ole Miss men’s tennis team advanced to the second round of singles and all three doubles teams remain after day one of the SEC Indoor Championships Friday at the Health Club in the Hilton.

Matthias Wellermann, seeded No. 2 in the “A” Draw, defeated LSU’s Kevin Dessauer, 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3.  He will face Alex Lacroix of Florida Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in the round of 16.  Bram ten Berge also beat an LSU player, downing Tiger James Cluskey, 7-6(2), 6-3 to advance to a second-round meeting against the No. 4 seed, Georgia’s Luis Flores.

Robbye Poole, seeded No. 8, was the only seed to fall in the opening round, losing to 93^rd-ranked John Patrick Smith of Tennessee, 6-3, 6-2.

The big news of the day was Ole Miss’ Erling Tveit withdrawing from the singles competition due to injury. Rebel sophomore Kalle Norberg was moved up to the “A” Draw to take Tveit’s place, and topped Matteo Fago of Tennessee, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.  Norberg will take on Jeff Damado of Florida Saturday at 10 a.m.

In the “B” Draw, senior Jakob Klaeson beat Mississippi State newcomer Max Genuini, 6-0, 7-5.  Klaeson will face Julien Gauthier of LSU in the second round Saturday at 8:30 a.m.    Jonas Berg, who had a first round bye in the “B” Draw, will meet Ryan Lissner of LSU in the second round.

In doubles, Poole and Klaeson edged Matt Brewer and Jeremy Tweedt of Tennessee, 9-7 in the first round to join their teammates in the round of 16.   Tveit and Berg are seeded No. 1 and had a first round bye, while Wellermann and ten Berge, seeded No. 3, also earned a bye.
