COLUMBIA, S.C. The Ole Miss women’s basketball team looks to rebound from a heartbreaking loss Thursday night at Kentucky when the Lady Rebels take on South Carolina Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. (CT) from the Colonial Center. 

 

Ole Miss (9-12, 3-5) nearly pulled off the upset Thursday night in Lexington as the Lady Rebels found themselves down just two points with under a minute left to play.  Senior forward Carla Bartee attempted to give the Lady Rebels the lead, but her three-point attempt hit off the back of the rim and rolled off to the left. 

 

After scoring a game-high 18 points against the Wildcats, Ole Miss junior center Shawn Goff improve her team-leading scoring average to 13.4 points per game.  In addition, Goff is second on the team with 7.4 rebounds per game, and needs just two blocked shots to move into sole possession of fourth place on the school’s singe season blocked shot list with 52 swats this season.  Goff collected a game-high three blocked shots against Kentucky to up her season total to 50. 

 

Lady Rebel sophomore guard Shantell Black also enters play Sunday averaging in double figures with her 10.1 points per game.  Along with her ability to score the basketball, Black is first in the SEC with 5.48 assists per game.  Bartee ranks third on the team with 9.5 points per game and is first on the Lady Rebels and eighth in the SEC with 8.1 rebounds per game. 

 

South Carolina enters play Sunday coming off a 78-48 loss Thursday night at Vanderbilt to fall to 1-7 inside the SEC. Prior to that game, however, the Gamecocks picked up their first league victory with a 59-50 win over Arkansas Feb. 3. South Carolina started conference play 0-6 before knocking off the Lady Razorbacks at the Colonial Center.  The Gamecocks are led on the offensive end by freshman guard Jordan Jones’ team-leading 12.2 points. In addition, junior Demetress Adams is second on the team with 11.4 points to go along with a team-leading 9.2 rebounds per game. Brionna Dickerson also averages double figures with 10.4 points per game.

 

Ole Miss owns a 15-9 overall record over the Gamecocks in the all-time series that dates back to the 1978-79 season. The Lady Rebels have won the last two meetings between the two schools and have claimed five out of the last six meetings as well. Earlier this season, Ole Miss earned a 74-61 victory over South Carolina Jan. 20 at Tad Smith Coliseum.  The Lady Rebels are just 3-6 all-time in games played in Columbia. Ole Miss will be in search of its first win in Columbia since claiming a 71- 65 victory Feb. 5, 2004.
