Ole Miss Leads Linger-Longer Invitational After First Round
3/14/2008 | Men's Golf
GREENSBORO, Ga. The Ole Miss men’s golf team shot a season-best 11-under 277 Friday, in the first round of the Linger-Longer Invitational, and leads the field by one stroke at Reynolds Plantation Golf Course. The Rebels, ranked No. 26 in Golfstat, lead 24th-ranked UT-Chattanooga (278) by one. No. 2 Georgia and Senior David Marino carded a career-best 67 to pace the Rebels. Marino posted an eagle and five birdies on the day and is tied for second at 5-under, one back of UTC’s J.T. Clendenin. Junior Jesse Speirs shot a 3-under 69, as did freshman Jonathan Randolph. Both are tied for seventh. Speirs’ day included four birdies, while “We played really well today,” head coach Ernest Ross said. “It is always good to have three players shoot in the 60s. While it is great to be leading, we have learned that you can’t win a tournament in the first round. I am really proud of David for shooting his career-best round of 67. We will try to play loose tomorrow and do our best to stay at the top.” The Rebels will begin teeing off the second round Saturday at 9:40 a.m. CT.
