3/2/2008 | Men's Golf

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. The 24th-ranked Ole Miss men’s golf team fired a 3-under 285 Sunday, in the first round of the Seminole Intercollegiate and is tied for first with host Florida State.

The Rebels made a comeback to get to the top of the leaderboard.  After starting out the front nine 4-over, they battled back, shooting 7-under on the back nine to end up with the 285.

Auburn and Virginia are tied for third at 286, and North Carolina rounds out the top five with a 290.

The Rebels were led by seniors Kyle Ellis and David Marino, and freshman Jonathan Randolph, who all carded a 1-under 71 and are tied for ninth.   Marino rallied on the back nine with four birdies to finish strong.  Randolph eagled the par-5 15th to move to 3-under before bogeying two of his last three holes.

Junior Jesse Speirs was 4-under through 14, but bogeyed three of his last four to finish at even par.  Freshman Chris Mullhaupt rounded out the scoring with a 73.

"We had a great team effort today,” head coach Ernest Ross said.  “We played especially well on the back nine.  David Marino made a great comeback, shooting 4-under on the back nine.    Our guys have learned to get off to good starts.  We haven’t finished well in the last two tournaments, but we are determined to finish well tomorrow.”

With rain in the forecast for Monday night into Tuesday, they will play 36 holes Tuesday, to conclude the tournament.
