Ole Miss Men's Tennis Turns Away Auburn 4-1

3/8/2008 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. -- The No. 5 nationally ranked Ole Miss men’s tennis team had to wait a day to play their match against No. 23 Auburn, when school closed Friday for snow.  It didn’t matter, as the Rebels came out Saturday afternoon and defeated the Tigers 4-1 at the Gillom Sports Center.

The Rebels will now have a short turnaround, as they host No. 21 Alabama Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.

Ole Miss (9-3, 2-1) got on the board first by taking the doubles point.   After the two teams split the Nos. 2 and 3 matches, Matthias Wellermann and Bram ten Berge defeated Auburn’s Alexey Tsyrenov and Terence Nugent 8-6 at No. 1 to clinch the point.

Auburn (6-4, 2-1) evened the match when Tsyrenov got two breaks to beat Wellermann 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.

The Rebels regained the lead for good, when senior Erling Tveit won a second-set tiebreaker to finish off Tiger Tim Puetz.  Tveit won the first set 6-3, and then up 5-4 in the breaker, served it out to grab his 99th career victory.

Ole Miss increased its lead to 3-1 when senior Robbye Poole came back to win his match on court three.  Poole lost the first set 6-2 against AU’s Lukas Marsoun.  The All-American regained his composure to take the second and third sets 6-4, 6-4 to snap a two-match losing streak.

Sophomore Kalle Norberg downed Alex Petropoulos 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles to clinch the Rebel victory for the second time in three matches.

“This was a good win over an excellent Auburn team,” head coach Billy Chadwick said.  “Having to play the next day due to school closing on Friday made it more difficult, but the guys rose to the occasion.  We played well at No. 1 and 2 doubles.  Erling stepped up in the second set and closed out his match.  We are proud of Robbye for coming back and winning his match, and then Kalle came through again.”

The Rebels have now won 21 straight against Auburn and have only allowed six points in the last eight contests.
