Speirs Leads Rebel Golfers On Day One Of SEC Championship
4/18/2008 | Men's Golf
ST. SIMON’S ISLAND, Speirs is tied with Michael Thompson of The Rebels as a team, finished with a 298 and sit in a tie for eighth. “It’s a long tough golf course,” head coach Ernest Ross said. “We got off to a very poor start. We were eight over before I even got my sweater off. Jesse played great only making one bogey all day. Kyle (Ellis) made a clutch birdie on the last hole to finish with a good round. These are the fastest greens I’ve seen since I’ve been back coaching. We had a good practice session after our round, and we are going to get after it tomorrow and try to play better.” Senior Kyle Ellis was 1-under heading into hole 13 but went bogey, double-bogey to move to +2. His birdie on the final hole (Par 5) gave him a 73, and he is tied for 17th. Freshman Johnny Delprete shot a 77, and senior David Marino turned in a 78 to round out the Rebel scoring. Freshman Jonathan Randolph, who finished second in the Bank of America Intercollegiate recently, double-bogeyed his first hole, and never got back on track, for a 79 in his first SEC Championship. The Rebels will tee of the second round Saturday beginning at 7:50 a.m. CT.
