Rebels Sweep South Carolina, Move Into SEC Tournament Picture

4/27/2008 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. Lauren Grill scored on a passed ball in the first inning and Tara Willitt pitched a complete-game shutout, as the Ole Miss Rebels knocked off South Carolina 1-0 in game three of the series on Sunday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. With the win the Rebels overtake the Gamecocks for eighth place in the SEC and the final spot in the SEC Tournament.

Grill tripled to right center to lead off the game in the bottom of the first for Ole Miss. Alyssa McGovern followed Grill with a bunt single to give the Rebels runners on the corners with no outs. McGovern stole second and Lisa Conchos lined out for the first out of the inning. Amber Tramp walked to load the bases and a passed ball allowed Grill. However, South Carolina starting pitcher Melissa Hendon came back to strikeout two batters to leave the bases loaded. Grill finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.

In the South Carolina fourth, left fielder Cagney Davis reached on a throwing error by Rebel starting pitcher Tara Willitt with two outs and nobody on base. Willitt then walked Jill Semento, but catcher P.J. Fulmer lined out to first baseman Lauren Rowe to end the inning.

Lindsey Walker singled through left side of the infield to lead off the top of the sixth for the Gamecocks, but played was halted due to rain. The game was called by officials after a 4:06 rain delay. The start of the game was also delayed 1:03 from the scheduled first pitch of 11 a.m. because of rain. The 4:06 delay and total delay of 5:09 are both thought to be Ole Miss Softball Complex records.

Willitt (8-11) picked up the win on senior day. She pitched 5.0 innings of shutout ball, allowing only three hits, while striking out four.

Hendon (8-14) suffered the loss for South Carolina after pitching 5.0 innings and allowing one run on hits three, while striking out four.

Ole Miss must await the South Carolina and LSU series next weekend in Columbia to determine its SEC Tournament fate. If the Tigers win the series against the Gamecocks, the Rebels will clinch their third-straight SEC Tournament berth.
