OXFORD, Miss. Bram ten Berge of the men’s tennis team, Cori Mehan of the women’s soccer team and Nicole Mahan of the volleyball team were among 70 students inducted into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Beta of Mississippi Chapter Friday in a ceremony held at the Johnson Commons Ballroom on the University of Mississippi campus.

ten Berge owns a 3.97 grade point average in the Classics.  The junior is a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and the 2006 SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  The Maarssen, Netherlands, native has been a member of the Chancellor’s Honor Roll every semester of his career.  He helped the Rebels win the Chancellor’s Cup (highest GPA among all varsity sports at Ole Miss) for the fourth year in a row this year, as well as the ITA All-Academic Team Award in 2005 and 2007.  The All-SEC honoree, currently sidelined with an injury, has teamed with Matthias Wellermann this season for a No. 19 ranking in doubles and a 23-6 overall record, 8-0 at No. 2 doubles.  The Rebels are ranked No. 7 in the nation and on their verge of clinching their seventh consecutive SEC West title this weekend.

One of the Rebel soccer team’s three captains as a senior, Cori Mehan boasts a 3.84 GPA as an English major and has been accepted into the prestigious Teach for America program upon graduation. A model all-around student-athlete, Mehan was a member of the 2006 SEC Community Service Team and continues to be involved extensively in the Oxford community. The Cordova, Tenn., native is a four-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member and has made UM’s Chancellor’s or Dean’s Honor Roll all seven semesters. Mehan was among nine Ole Miss student-athletes honored on the Fall 2007 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Mahan holds a 3.92 GPA in Art History.  The junior from Amarillo, Texas, helped lead the volleyball team to back-to-back NCAA appearances in 2006 and 2007 and a 25-9 record last fall.  The Rebels finished third in the overall SEC standings with a 13-6 conference record.  The versatile all-around player was named to the Akron Invitational All-Tournament Team in the fall with a career-high 28 kills against Wright State.

The University of Mississippi Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was chartered on April 6, 2001.  It is the second of two chapters established in the state, with the Alpha of Mississippi Chapter residing at Millsaps College.  Ole Miss is now in an elite group of only 270 colleges and universities in the nation who shelter a chapter.  In addition to recognizing outstanding undergraduates at an annual initiation ceremony, the University of Mississippi Chapter sponsors lectures by distinguished Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholars.
