Pomeranz Named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America By Collegiate Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. Freshman southpaw Drew Pomeranz was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America selection by Collegiate Baseball, the publication announced on Wednesday.

Pomeranz joins a long line of Rebels who have been named Freshman All-America selections, including current teammates Jordan Henry and Zach Miller who were named to the honor last season.

“This is a tremendous honor and one that Drew certainly deserves,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “He had a great season for us with some impressive wins over some good Southeastern Conference teams after moving into the starting role a couple of weeks into league play.”

The Collierville, Tenn., native posted a 4-3 record on the season as a starter who worked his way into the weekend rotation in Southeastern Conference play. Pomeranz drew his first SEC start on the road against Alabama before posting an impressive three week stint. The 3-0 stretch saw the left-hander shutout No. 6 Vanderbilt as well as pick up wins over LSU and at No. 10 South Carolina. In that time, Pomeranz pitched 21.0 innings and allowed only two runs.

Pomeranz struck out 81 batters on the season, tying the freshman record set by Jeff Calhoun in 1977.

Most recently, Pomeranz accepted an invitation to participate in the 2008 USA Baseball National Team Trials.
