Former Rebel Golfer Captures Scottish Amateur

8/4/2008 | Men's Golf

OXFORD, Miss. Former Ole Miss men’s golfer Callum Macaulay captured the Allied Surveyors Scottish Amateur Championship this past weekend at Carnoustie Golf Club in Scotland.

A native of Tulliallan, Scotland, Macaulay defeated Steven McEwan (Caprington) 5 & 3 in a 36-hole final at Carnoustie.

The players began the afternoon round all-square after the first 18 holes. McEwan was the first player to make an early break seizing a 1-hole lead with a par at the 2nd, which Macaulay bogeyed.

When play resumed after a thunderstorm delayed play, Macaulay got back into the match with a birdie at the 7th.  That left the players level again.

“The rain delay helped me,” Macaulay said. After that I played great and got into a rhythm.  A great tee shot at the 7th got me going. I am grateful that I had enough time to bounce back.”

McEwan bogeyed 9, 10 and 11 as Macaulay, last year’s Scottish Order of Merit winner, claimed the momentum.   Macaulay would go on to birdie 12 to extend his lead before the 15th was conceded for a 5-up lead.    The former All-SEC golfer won nine straight matches during the championship on his way to claiming his first ever national title.

Last year’s Scottish Golfer of the Year said, “It feels great to win my first ever national championship at such a venue, joining some great names on that trophy.”

One of those great names, Paul Lawrie (former Open winner), presented Macaulay with his trophy afterwards.

In his final year (2007) at Ole Miss Macaulay led the Rebels to a fourth-place finish at the SEC Championship as well as a berth in the NCAA East Regional.  He plans to go to Tour School later in the fall.

“I have loved playing as an amateur,” he said.  “But I want to go to Tour School, and if I make it to the final stage, I will turn pro.  If it does not work out, I will be defending my title at Royal Troon next year.”

After this past weekend, Macaulay vaulted to the top of the Scottish Order of Merit (ranking for top amateurs).
