Donate Books And Earn Free Admission To WBB Game
12/7/2009 | Women's Basketball
OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's basketball team is offering free admission to anyone who brings a new or used book to Sunday's game when the Rebels host ninth-ranked Ohio State at 1 p.m. from Tad Smith Coliseum.
Ole Miss has joined forces with the Lafayette County Literacy Council in the fight against illiteracy, and Rebel fans can do their part by donating books to help the thousands of people in and around the Oxford area suffering from illiteracy. All 13 members of the women's basketball team will participate in the event and donate several books for the cause.
It's a fact that 23 percent of adults in Lafayette County are functionally illiterate, meaning approximately 9,000 adults in our community can not read well enough to fill out a job application or follow a simple recipe.
According to Annie E. Casey Foundation's 2008 Kids count Data Book, Mississippi has the highest percentage of fourth graders who failed to reach the basic proficiency level in reading. Twenty-eight percent of Mississippians aged 18 to 24 did not graduate from high school.
The Lafayette County Literacy Council is fighting illiteracy by providing programs for every age. Private, one-on-one free tutoring for adult learners is available by contacting the Literacy Council office at (662) 234-4234.
Realizing that the fight against illiteracy begins at birth, the Lafayette County Literacy Council has recently partnered with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library to provide each and every preschool child in Lafayette County with his or her own library of free books. The program is available to every child under the age of five who lives in Lafayette County. Parents may register their children online at www.imaginationlibrary.com by clicking on the parent login tab, or by calling the Literacy Council office at (662) 234-4234, or visiting the Oxford-Lafayette County Library.
Once registered, a child will continue receiving a book each month in the mail until the child's fifth birthday, as long as the child continues to live in Lafayette County.
Help your child enter kindergarten ready to learn by reading to your child every day.
The Lafayette County Literacy Council invites you to join the fight against illiteracy. Contribute to the solutions through volunteerism and donations.
