Rebels Split Double Header With South Carolina

3/18/2009 | Softball

COLUMBIA, S.C. Lauren Grill hit a three-run triple in the seventh to help Ole Miss to a 12-8 victory over South Carolina in the second game of a double header on Wednesday. The game saw the Rebels jump out to a 7-0 advantage only to see the Gamecocks battle back for an 8-7 lead, before Grill’s triple sealed the Ole Miss victory. The Rebels dropped game one of the double header 2-1 in 11 innings.

“The girls showed a lot of character and heart to battle back for the win, especially after losing a close, extra-inning game like we did,” said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson.

The Rebels struck first as they broke the game open in the top of the third with five runs, three of which scored with two outs. Second baseman Lisa Conchos started the rally with a one-out single to center and was followed by a Lauren Grill single to right. Catcher Amber Tramp moved up both runners up on a fly out before third baseman Ashley Dowdy hit a ground ball to short and beat the throw to first. The play was ruled an error, but it allowed Conchos and Grill to score and gave Ole Miss a 3-0 advantage. Right fielder Alyssa McGovern added an RBI single and first baseman Aly Presswood smashed a two-run single to right center later in the inning that staked the Rebels to a 6-0 lead.

McGovern extended the Ole Miss lead to 7-0 in the fifth on a RBI single to left. She finished the 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI. Grill finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Presswood knocked in two runs, while Conchos and May each added an RBI.

South Carolina battled back to take a brief lead in the fifth after an eight run outburst put the Gamecock up 8-7.

That lead was short lived, as Courtnie Ghinaudo singled to left to start the next inning and scored on Lisa Conchos’ first career triple down the line in right to tie the game at eight. Michelle May then singled up the middle to score Conchos and put the Rebels back on top 9-8. Grill smashed her bases-load triple in the top of the seventh that gave the Rebels their final margin.

Becky Nye picked up the win for the Rebels after pitching the final 2.1 innings and allowing only one hit. Lindsey Perry started for Ole Miss and pitched 4.1 innings. She gave up six hits and six runs, while striking out one.

Ole Miss will host No. 2 Alabama this weekend in a three-game SEC series in Oxford. The Rebels and Crimson Tide will play a double header on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. and conclude the series on Sunday 1 p.m.

Game One

South Carolina shortstop Evan Childs singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning, as the Gamecocks clipped Ole Miss 2-1 in game one of a double header on Wednesday.

Gamecock right fielder Laura Mendes singled up the middle with one down in the frame and moved up second on a ground out, before Childs stepped to the plate and singled to center to send Mendes racing home.

In the top of the 11th, after three scoreless innings, Rebel first baseman Aly Preswood led off the frame with a walk and Courtnie Ghinaudo laid down a bunt single to put runners at first and second with no outs for Ole Miss. A wild pitch moved both base runners up, before Corinne Doornberg grounded out for the first out of the inning and Lisa Conchos struck out to put two down. Lauren Grill was then intentionally walked for the third time in the game to bring up designated player Michelle May, who grounded out to strand all three runners.

With two out and nobody on the bottom of the fifth, South Carolina left fielder Lauren Lackey doubled to left and designated player Cagney Davis walked to give the Gamecocks runners on first and second. Right fielder Laura Mendes then singled up the middle to drive home Lackey and give South Carolina a 1-0 lead.

Junior All-American Lauren Grill answered for Ole Miss in the top of the sixth with a solo home run to left center that tied the score at one. It was Grill’s sixth homer of the season and 32nd career long ball.

Center fielder Courtnie Ghinaudo led off the top of the seventh with an infield single and Grill was intentionally walked again with two down in the frame to give Ole Miss runners at first and second. Michelle May then singled up the middle, but South Carolina center fielder Lauren Lackey threw Ghinaudo out at home to end the inning.

Becky Nye took the loss for Ole Miss after entering in the sixth in relief of starting pitcher Kelly Chandler. Nye pitched 5.1 innings and allowed only two hits and one run, while striking out two. Chandler started and gave up five hits and one run in 5.1 innings.
