Ole Miss Drops A Pair To No. 2 Alabama

3/21/2009 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. The No. 2 nationally-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide took both games of a double header from the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday, as the Tide defeated Ole Miss 13-4 in game one and 15-0 in game two.

Alabama (25-4, 5-2 SEC) scored in every inning, as they downed the Rebels (12-15, 1-9 SEC) 13-4 in the first game of the day.

The Crimson Tide took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a Cassie Reilly-Boccia two-run single. Alabama had runners on second and third with only one out, but Rebel starting pitcher Becky Nye retired the next two batters to end the inning.

Ole Miss answered back the bottom of the first after center fielder Courtnie Ghinaudo tripled to right with one down and scored on passed ball by Crimson Tide catcher Ashley Holcombe.

Alabama added four more runs in the second on a two-run double from first baseman Amanda Locke and a pair of RBI singles from Brittany Rogers and Charlotte Morgan.

The Rebels loaded the bases in the second on a pair of singles from Aly Presswood and Corrine Doornberg and an Amber Tramp walk, but Tide starting pitcher Kelsi Dunne struck out Lauren Grill and retired Ghinaudo on a fly out to leave the bases loaded.

Ole Miss loaded the bases once again in the third on a pair of walks from Ashley Dowdy and Lisa Conchos and a single from Tramp with two down in the frame, but Dunne struck out Presswood to end the inning.

The Tide added to their lead in the fourth inning with a solo home run from Ashley Holcombe that gave Alabama a 7-1 advantage. In the fourth, the Crimson Tide put up a three spot on a two-run homer from first baseman Amanda Locke and an RBI double from left fielder Jazlyn Lunceford.

Lauren Grill and Lisa Conchos knocked back-to-back doubles in the fourth to pull the Rebels to within 10-2. Grill smashed her double into the left center gap and Conchos knocked Grill in with a double off the left field wall. Conchos scored later in the inning on a throwing error by Alabama first baseman Amanda Locke to make the score 10-3 Tide. Right fielder Alyssa McGovern knocked an RBI single into right that pulled the Rebels to within 10-4.

Grill finished 1-for-3 at the plate with a double and a run scored, while Conchos went 1-for-2 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

Alabama scored three more runs in the top of the fifth, as catcher Kendall Dawson smashed a bases-loaded double off the wall in left that cleared the bases and gave the Tide a 13-4 advantage.

Nye took the loss for Ole Miss after pitching 4.0 innings. She allowed 10 runs on 10 hits and struck out three. Freshman Kelly Chandler entered in relief of Nye in the fifth and pitched the final inning. She allowed three runs on one hit and walked two batters.

Game Two

Alabama scored eight and seven runs in back-to-back innings, as the Tide knocked off Ole Miss 15-0 in the second game on Saturday.

The Crimson Tide jumped on the Rebels in the top of the second, as they scored eight runs on seven hits, aided by three Ole Miss errors. The biggest blow of the inning was a two-run double off the wall in left by Crimson Tide second baseman Whitney Larson. Alabama also scored two runs on an arrant throw by Rebel third baseman Ashley Dowdy.

The Tide added seven more runs in the third to take a 15-0 lead highlighted by a two-run single from starting pitcher Charlotte Morgan and RBI singles by Jazlyn Lunceford and Ashley Holcombe.

Ole Miss couldn’t muster much offense, as Alabama starting pitcher Charlotte Morgan limited the Rebels to just two hits, a pair of singles by Ashley Dowdy and Michelle May.

The Rebels didn’t help themselves in the field, as seven Ole Miss miscues led to seven unearned runs for Alabama.

Kelly Chandler started the game for Ole Miss and suffered the loss. She allowed 11 runs, five earned, in 2.1 innings. Lindsey Perry entered in relief of Chandler in the third and gave up four runs in 0.2 innings. Becky Nye pitched the final 2.0 innings and gave up no runs, no hits and struck out two.

Ole Miss and Alabama will conclude their three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
