McGovern's Single Leads Rebels Past No. 17 LSU

3/24/2009 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. Alyssa McGovern singled home Alise Doubt from third with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to propel the Ole Miss Rebels to a 3-2 victory over No. 17 LSU in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday.

McGovern’s single to center sent Doubt racing home with the Rebels’ (13-17, 2-11 SEC) game-winning run. Doubt started the inning on second after Tiger third baseman Ashley Langoni’s arrant throw allowed Doubt to reach. Aly Presswood then sacrificed Doubt to third to set up McGovern’s game-winning hit.

“I told the girls they needed to keep playing hard and that’s what we did,” said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. “We played with a lot of heart and were able to score a couple of runs to send the game into extra innings. Then Alyssa came up with a big hit to win the game for us.”

Trailing 2-0 heading to the bottom of the seventh, the Rebels were able to plate two runs in the frame to send the game to extra innings. Shortstop Lauren Grill walked to start the inning and second baseman Lisa Conchos followed with a single to right. Third baseman Ashley Dowdy sacrificed both runners over before an Amber Tramp ground out plated Grill for the Rebels' first run and moved Amanda Hutcheson to third, who entered the game to pinch run for Conchos. LSU starting pitcher Cody Trahan then unleashed a wild pitch to score a diving Hutcheson from third to tie the game at two.

McGovern finished the game with a hit and an RBI, while Grill went 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.

After two scoreless frames, LSU loaded the bases in the top of the 10th on a pair of walks and a fielding error by Dowdy, but Rebel starting pitcher Becky Nye retired left fielder Jazz Jackson on a ground out to end the inning.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on a two-run home run by second baseman Ashley Langoni.

LSU had runners on the corners with one out in the top of the second courtesy of a hit-by-pitch and an infield single, but Nye got Tiger first baseman Anissa Young and catcher Morgan Russell to pop out to end the inning.

Nye earned the victory after going 10.0 innings in the complete-game effort. She allowed only two runs on four hits and struck out four.

Next up, Ole Miss will host SEC-West leader Arkansas in Oxford this weekend for a three-game series. The two teams will play a double header on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Game Two

Ole Miss dropped the second game of the doubleheader to the No. 17 nationally-ranked LSU Tigers on Wednesday by a final score of 5-2.

An RBI single from shortstop Juliana Santos got the Tigers on the scoreboard in the top of the third. LSU added to its lead later in the inning after Rebel shortstop Lauren Grill’s arrant throw allowed Santos to score with two down in the frame.

LSU added another run in the fifth on an RBI single up the middle from first baseman Anissa Young to extend its lead to 3-0.

Junior Lauren Grill singled home freshman Corrine Doornberg to bring the Rebels to within 3-1 of LSU in the bottom of the sixth. Ole Miss had runners on the corners with two down, but third baseman Ashley Dowdy flew out the center to end the inning.

Doornberg finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Grill added a hit and an RBI in three at-bats.

The Tigers put up a pair of runs in the seventh on an Anissa Young single to go up 5-1.

The Rebels battled back in the bottom of the seventh after a Doornberg double cut the Tiger lead 5-2. However, LSU starting pitcher Brittany Mack got Alise Doubt to ground out to end the game.

Sophomore Lindsey Perry started for the Rebels and pitched 7.0 innings in the complete-game effort. She allowed five runs, but only one earned, as four Ole Miss errors contributed to the final score. Perry gave up seven hits and struck out three batters.
