Rebels Sweep Razorbacks In A Doubleheader

3/28/2009 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss used solid pitching, timely hitting and great defense to sweep a pair of games from the SEC West leading Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. In the first game, junior Aly Presswood hit a two-run single down the right field line with two outs in the fifth inning to help lead the Rebels over the Razorbacks by a final score of 5-4. Ole Miss scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take game two 3-2 over Arkansas.

“We really played well in all three phases of the game today,” said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. “We had good pitching, got some timely hits and played great defense. That’s what it takes to win games. I’m proud of how we played today, now we have to come out and do it again tomorrow.”

Shortstop Brittany Griffiths gave Arkansas an early 1-0 lead in the first game with an RBI double to left in the top of the second. Arkansas loaded the bases with two down in the frame, but Rebel starting pitcher Becky Nye got center fielder Jessica Bachkora to pop out to second to strand the runners.

Third baseman Ashley Dowdy reached on a hit by pitch to lead off bottom of the second for Ole Miss and was followed by catcher Amber Tramp’s single to left to give the Rebels runners on first and second. Left fielder Alyssa McGovern then laid down a sac bunt to move both runners over with one out. After Presswood popped out to short, center fielder Alise Doubt hit a single over the shortstop’s head to score both runners and give Ole Miss a 2-1 lead.

Arkansas responded in the top of the third with an RBI triple to right center by second baseman Kayla Johnson. Johnson scored later in the frame on an infield single by third baseman Amie Hubbard to give the Razorbacks a 3-2 lead.

Lauren Grill answered back for the Rebels in the bottom of the third after she doubled to left center with one down and moved to third on Michelle May’s single to left. Grill then stole home on the front end of a double steal to tie the game at three.

Ole Miss took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth on Presswood’s single down the right field line with the bases load and two outs that knocked in Courtnie Ghinaudo and McGovern.

Presswood finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate and tied a career high with two RBI. Doubt also tied a career high with two RBI in a 1-for-3 performance. Tramp added two hits in three at-bats and scored twice for the Rebels.

Arkansas cut the Ole Miss lead to 5-4 in the top of the seventh with a two-out RBI double to left by Johnson, but Nye got designated player Miranda Dixon to ground out to third to end the game.

Nye worked 7.0 innings in the complete-game effort, striking three and allowing four runs on 10 hits.

Ole Miss will go for the sweep of the Razorbacks tomorrow, as the two teams conclude their three-game series at 1 p.m. at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.

Game Two

Ole Miss scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit and knock off the Arkansas Razorbacks 3-2 in the second game of the day. Senior second baseman Lisa Conchos tied the game at two for the Rebels in bottom of the frame with a long home run just inside the left field foul pole that scored Corrine Doornberg, who had singled to right with one down.

It was Conchos’ first home run of the season and first since she smashed a grand slam against the Razorback last year.

The homer tied the game at two, but the Rebels weren’t finished in the inning. Shortstop Lauren Grill followed Conchos with an infield single and advanced to second on an arrant throw by third baseman Amie Hubbard. Designated player Michelle May struck out for the second out of the inning, but third baseman Ashley Dowdy singled off Arkansas pitcher Miranda Dixon’s glove and Grill raced home in the confusion for the eventual game-winning run.

Conchos finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate with the home run and Grill added two hits and a run scored in three at-bats.

Ole Miss starting pitcher Lindsey Perry set the Razorbacks down in order in the top of the seventh for the win. Perry worked 7.0 innings and struck five in the complete-game effort. She allowed only two runs on six hits.

Second baseman Kayla Johnson gave the Razorbacks an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first after she singled home center fielder Jessica Bachkora, who was hit by a pitch by lead off the game.

Arkansas added a second run the sixth on an RBI double by Dixon. The Razorbacks threatened in the fifth after they placed runners on second and third with two outs. Johnson hit a sharp grounder deep into the six hole, but shortstop Lauren Grill ranged onto the outfield grass to field the ball and gunned Johnson out at first to end the inning.
