4/1/2009 | Men's Tennis

BIRIMINGHAM, Ala. -- For the second time this season, Devin Britton of the No. 2 nationally ranked Ole Miss men’s tennis team has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week as announced by the league office Wednesday.

Britton went 4-1 in singles and doubles in wins over Florida Atlantic, No. 7 Florida and No. 16 South Carolina.  Against UF’s Alex Lacroix, he was down 4-5 and 0-30 on his serve, before rallying to win it 7-5, giving the Rebels a 3-2 lead.

The Jackson, Miss., native improved to 6-2 at No. 2 singles with his straight set win over South Carolina’s Pedro Campos.  Britton has helped the Rebels to a 6-0 start in the SEC, their best since the 2004 season.

This marks the fourth SEC weekly honor for Ole Miss this season.  Britton also earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors Feb. 17 after clinching both of the Rebels’ wins at the ITA National Team Indoor.   Freshmen Marcel Thiemann and Otto Sauer have also received the accolade.

Ole Miss goes for its seventh consecutive Top 25 win in the SEC Friday as they welcome No. 13 Kentucky to the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center for a 4 p.m. match.  Fans will enjoy free chicken compliments of Bofields, and admission is free.
