Men's Golf Finishes Eighth At SEC Championship

4/19/2009 | Men's Golf

ST. SIMON’S ISLAND, Ga. The Ole Miss men’s golf team shot a 292 in the final round of the SEC Championship Sunday and was unable to make up any ground, finishing in eighth place at the Frederica Golf Club.

This is one of the strongest fields the Rebels have faced all year, with six teams in the top 25 and eight in the top 30.

Sophomore Jonathan Randolph and freshman Joe David tied for 21st with a 220 to lead the Rebels.  Randolph shot consecutive rounds of even par after an opening 76.  David carded a 1-under 71 in between rounds of 74 and 75.

The Rebels’ other freshman, Sean Dale, finished tied for 34th at 226.  He turned in a 72 in the second round after a 76 in the first round.  Dale posted a final round 75.  Senior Jesse Speirs had the low round of the day for Ole Miss, shooting a 2-under 70, but rounds of 79 and 77 left him at 226 for the tournament.  Junior Will Roebuck started the tournament with a 70, but finished with a 75 and 84.

“We made some improvement, but some other teams played great today,” head coach Ernest Ross said.  “Today the greens got really firm and fast, and the better putters took advantage of the great putting surfaces.

“As a team, we just can’t seem to get over the hump.  We are pretty sure we will be playing at NCAA Regionals.  We will try to eliminate mistakes and shoot lower scores.  Our players are giving good effort, and we need to continue our effort.”

Georgia lapped the field to win the championship with a 13-under 849.  The Bulldogs bested second-place Arkansas (862) by 13 strokes.  Florida came in third at 865, while LSU and South Carolina tied for fourth at 872.  Florida’s Billy Horschel captured medalist honors with a 10-under 206.

The NCAA Regional selections will be announced Monday, May 4.
