Rebels Kick Off Final Home Stand With No.13 Kentucky

4/2/2009 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The baseball team isn’t the only one hosting Kentucky this weekend.  The No. 2 nationally ranked Rebel tennis team kicks off its final home stand with No. 13 Kentucky Friday at 4 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.  Fans coming to the match will enjoy free chicken compliments of Bofields.

At 6-0 in the SEC, the Rebels want the fans there to help them continue their quest for an SEC title.

“This is another big weekend for us, as we try to keep our momentum in the SEC going,” head coach Billy Chadwick said.  “We would like to encourage all the fans to come out and help us take down the Wildcats in tennis and baseball.  Kentucky has one of the best teams they’ve had in a long time, so it will be another tough match.”

On Sunday, the Rebels will host Vanderbilt at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.  The team will honor seniors Jonas Berg and Bram ten Berge.

This duo’s impressive credentials include four SEC West titles, an overall SEC Championship, an SEC Tournament Championship, an NCAA Final Four, an NCAA Elite Eight and two NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances.  Berg and ten Berge are presently ranked No. 2 in the nation in doubles and Berg is among the top 25 in singles.

“Jonas and Bram have done an outstanding job of guiding a young team this year,” Chadwick said.  “Both have contributed largely to the success of our program during the last four years. They’ve been great ambassadors for Ole Miss, and we would like everyone to come out Sunday as we recognize their accomplishments.”

The Rebels are off to their best start in league play since 2004, when they began 7-0.  They are also looking for their seventh consecutive top 25 win in the SEC.

Kentucky comes into the weekend with a 13-5 overall record, 3-3 in the SEC.  They are coming off a 5-2 loss to No. 5 Ohio State on Wednesday.  Prior to that, the Wildcats gained a huge 4-3 win over Auburn on the road.  The Wildcats are led by senior Bruno Agostinelli, who is ranked No. 5 in the nation with a 12-4 record.

Ole Miss is a tough assignment for opponents in Oxford.  The Rebels are 66-3 at home since April 6, 2003.  The Rebels are 7-0 at home this year.

Admission to all matches is free.
