4/22/2009 | Baseball
OXFORD, Miss. -- The Rebels used an early run, scoring five runs in the first three innings, to push past UALR (9-26) on Tuesday as No. 11 Ole Miss (29-11) defeated the Trojans 6-1 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
A two-RBI single from Zach Miller in the first inning and a two-run home run from Brett Basham in the second pushed the Rebels out to an early lead and proved to be enough behind the solid pitching of the Rebels as Ole Miss picked up the win.
Nathan Baker (3-0) picked up the win as he worked 5.2 innings and held the Trojans to one run on four hits with two strikeouts. Aaron Barrett held UALR hitless and posted six strikeouts over the next 2.2 innings before Matt Tracy closed out the ninth.
Jake Sullivan (3-4) took the loss for UALR as he worked 5.2 innings and allowed six runs on eight hits with five walks and four strikeouts.
"It was a pretty clean game for us tonight," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "We started off strong and then settled in. Nathan Baker was tremendous tonight to come out and battle like that after throwing a lot on Saturday afternoon at Florida. Aaron Barrett pitched well tonight and Matt Tracy did a good job at the end.
"Everybody was excited for Brett Basham when he hit that home run tonight," Bianco said. "He looked terrific behind the plate and looked like he did all last season. He really handles the pitchers well."
Ole Miss scored in the first when Miller came up with a two-run single up the middle that scored Logan Power and Matt Smith. Power walked before moving to third on a double from Smith to set up the Miller hit.
UALR answered with a run in the second. Landis Wilson doubled to open the inning and moved to third on a groundout to third from Jack Larner. He then scored on a groundout to second from Anthony Gower to get the Trojans on the board.
Basham then hit his two-run shot in the bottom half of he inning, driving in Button who walked to open the Rebel half of the second and push the lead to 4-1.
Ole Miss added to the lead in the third as Miller doubled to open the frame, then stole second and scored on a wild pitch that went to the backstop on the same play in which he stole third base.
The Rebels added their final run of the night in the sixth when Taylor Hashman scored on a single from Power. Hashman walked before taking second on a wild pitch and then scoring on the single from Power to give the Rebels the 6-1 lead.
It would hold until the end as Barrett and Tracy kept UALR off the board the rest of the way.
Ole Miss will return to action on Wednesday when the Rebels travel to take on the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
