BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Ole Miss men’s golf freshman Joe David was named to the All-SEC second team as the conference yearly awards were announced Monday. David also made the All-Freshman Team along with teammate Sean Dale.
David becomes the third player since head coach Ernest Ross returned to the program (in 2004), to earn All-SEC first or second team honors. Ross has now coached 13 players to All-SEC honors during his career.
“I am proud of our two freshmen for their awards,” head coach Ernest Ross said. “Joe David had an extremely good year as a freshman. I don’t think we have ever had a freshman make an All-SEC team until this year, so this is quite an accomplishment. Sean Dale also had a good season, making the All-SEC Freshman team. This is a good step for our program, to see that players can come in and get better during the year.”
David, a Madison, Tenn., native owns a team-leading 72.78 stroke average. He boasts two top-five, three top-10 and seven top-20 finishes on the year. He tied for second at the Squire Creek Invitational for his best finish, and also tied for fourth at the Shoal Creek. David posted 15 rounds at par or better.
Dale is second on the on the team in stroke average with a 73.17 and owns four top-10 and six top-20 finishes.
The freshmen duo has led the Rebels to a current ranking of No. 29 and seven top-five showings in 11 tournaments.
Ole Miss is expected to receive their third consecutive bid to the NCAA Regionals. The selections will be announced Monday, May 4.
