Devin Britton Reaches NCAA Singles Quarterfinals

5/22/2009 | Men's Tennis

COLLEGE STATION, Texas Ole Miss freshman Devin Britton and his opponent, Rice senior Bruno Rosa, battled extremely windy conditions on Friday, but the Rebel came away with a straight set win to advance to the quarterfinals in the NCAA Singles Championship here at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

The Mississippi native became the 24th All-American and the first freshman to earn the honor in the history of the program, with his second round win on Thursday.   He could have stopped there; instead he defeated Rosa 6-3, 6-4 in the third round to win his 11th straight.

Britton broke Rosa’s serve in the second game of the first set, but Rosa was able to break back.  At 4-3, Britton broke again and held to win the set 6-3.  Rosa returned the favor in the second set, breaking Britton and leading 3-0.  Just like he has so many times this season, Britton never flinched, breaking Rosa twice and holding on for 6-4, setting up a quarterfinal meeting against Stanford sophomore Alex C.ayton.

“Devin played great,” head coach Billy Chadwick said.  “When gets down, he never misses a beat.  He comes right back and takes the set and the match.  It’s fun to watch.”

Britton, the ITA Southeast Region Rookie of the Year, is now the only freshman remaining in the singles draw.  In fact, five of the remaining eight players in the field are seniors.
