Rebels Drop Decisive Game Of Super Regional

OXFORD, Miss. -- The Rebels score quickly out of the gates on the Cavaliers with a run in the first inning, but that was all the offense that could be mustered as No. 8 Ole Miss (44-20) saw its season come to an end with a 5-1 loss to No. 5 Virginia (48-13-1) in the Super Regionals on Sunday.
With the win, Virginia advanced to the College World Series while the Rebels' season came to an end one game short of Omaha. It is the fourth time in the last five seasons Ole Miss has played for a spot in the College World Series.
Nathan Baker (4-3) took the loss for the Rebels as he allowed four runs - two earned - on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
Reliever Tyler Wilson (9-3) picked up the win for the Cavaliers as he worked 3.1 innings of relief and held the Rebels scoreless while limiting Ole Miss to two hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
Ole Miss once again jumped out to the early lead as the Rebels pushed a run across in the first when Jordan Henry scored on a single to right from Matt Smith. Henry doubled to right center before moving to third on a sac bunt from Logan Power. He then scored on the single to right from Smith.
Virginia tied things in the fourth with a run as sacrifice fly from John Hicks that scored Phil Gosselin. Gosselin singled to open the inning before stealing second and third to get into scoring position for the Hicks fly out.
The Cavaliers then took the lead in the fifth with a three run inning as Virginia used three hits and capitalized on two Rebel errors to score three runs and take the lead for good. Steven Proscia opened the inning with a single before taking second on a steal. He then scored on a single from Franco Valdes to give the Cavs the 2-1 lead.
Valdes then moved to third on a fielding error at shortstop that allowed John Barr to reach and put two men on base. Valdes then scored on a sac fly from Tyler Cannon and then a single up the middle from Gosselin scored Barr to give Virginia a 4-1 advantage.
The Cavaliers added a final run in the eighth when Hicks scored on a double down the left field line from Proscia. Hicks opened the inning with a double and then took third on a single from Danny Hultzen before scoring on the Proscia double to get to the final 5-1 margin of victory.
Matt Smith led the Rebels at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance and an RBI.
Proscia led the Cavaliers at the plate with a 3-for-4 afternoon that included a run scored and an RBI. He was one of three Virginia players to notch multiple hits on the afternoon.
The 44 wins tied the second most wins in a season for Ole Miss matching the 2006 season total that also saw the Rebels advance to the NCAA Super Regional against Miami. The 2005 team
Posted 48 wins for the most in school history.
