Rebel Duo Experiences Tough Conditions At U.S. Am
8/25/2009 | Men's Golf
TULSA, Okla. - With tough conditions at the 109th U.S. Amateur Championship Monday, only five players were under par at the conclusion of the first round of stroke play qualifying. Ole Miss Rebels Jonathan Randolph and Joe David played Southern Hills Country Club, site of previous U.S. Opens, and shot 74 and 81, respectively.
Southern Hills was thought to be the harder of the two courses, the other being Cedar Ridge Country Club. In fact, of the five scores under par, only one came at Southern Hills.
"This is a great course and a good test," said Randolph, this year's Mississippi State Amateur Champion. "The rough is high, the fairways are tight and the greens are fast. And, I got a penalty for slow play."
"I was 1-over heading into the final three holes (7-9) and bogeyed two of the last three and then was assessed a stroke for slow play, so I went from one to four over. I am ready to get after it tomorrow."
David didn't fare as well, on the same course, finishing at +11, including two triple-bogeys.
Both players will play Cedar Ridge Country Club tomorrow. Randolph is right there in the mix for match play, while David has a lot of work left to do to advance to match play. The low 64 scorers advance to match play, which begins Wednesday.
Check back at www.OleMissSports.com Tuesday for a complete recap and to see if one or both players advance to match play.
